Payment guide
How foreign visitors usually pay in mainland China when wallets fail, cards are declined, or cash is limited. Confirm on official apps and customs pages — products and rules change.
1. Alipay — bind a foreign card
- Install Alipay from your app store before or after arrival.
- Register with your passport / phone number as prompted.
- In Wallet / Bank Cards, add an international Visa, Mastercard, or other supported card.
- Complete any SMS steps after you have a mainland number.
- Test a small merchant QR payment and read in-app fee / limit notices.
2. WeChat Pay / Tour Pass
- Install WeChat and complete identity verification when asked.
- Try linking an international card in Wallet where available.
- Tour Pass style products change often — follow only in-app official flows.
- Test a tiny QR payment at a real merchant before relying on it.
3. UnionPay ATMs & bank counters
- Look for UnionPay logos on ATMs; try major bank machines first.
- Tell your home bank you will withdraw in China to reduce blocks.
- Keep ATM receipts; fees vary by bank and network.
- If the ATM rejects the card, try another bank brand or a staffed counter.
- Use withdrawn RMB as your float while you retry wallet binding.
4. Cash float & entry limits
Keep crisp RMB for taxis, markets, and shops that refuse foreign cards. Large cash movements are regulated — do not plan your whole trip on undeclared bulk cash.
- Before flying: read China Customs rules on carrying currency / cash into or out of the mainland.
- Arrive with a modest float (for example a few days of food + transport), not a suitcase of notes.
- Exchange at bank desks or licensed airport counters; keep the receipt if you may convert leftovers later.
- Spend or reconvert leftovers before exit when practical.

Thresholds and declaration forms change. ChinaCopilot does not calculate your allowance. When unsure, declare and ask Customs officers.
5. Hotel / front-desk backup
When QR wallets still fail, many visitors ask the hotel to help with small payments or point to a working ATM. This is a courtesy, not a right.
- Ask reception whether they can add a meal/taxi to the room bill or accept a foreign card at the desk.
- Ask where the nearest bank ATM that often works for foreign cards is.
- Keep passport ready — hotels sometimes need it for assistance.
- Do not hand your wallet PIN or full card details to random helpers in the lobby.
6. Failure ladder (use in order)
Work top-down. Jumping straight to informal cash networks increases scam and legal risk.
- Notify your home bank / unlock international transactions; retry the foreign card in Alipay and WeChat.
- Complete SMS with a working mainland number; retry both wallets.
- Withdraw RMB at a UnionPay ATM or bank counter.
- Use cash float for essential rides and food.
- Ask hotel front desk for bill-to-room or ATM directions.
- Re-test a ¥20–50 QR before assuming wallets are fixed.
- If nothing works: reduce cash spend, prefer hotel-billed services, and contact your bank from a reachable channel.
